Val spent her childhood in rural Lincolnshire in the UK and lived in Oxford, London, Edinburgh and Durham before moving to Australia in the eighties. Since then she has lived in cities, at the beach and in the mountains, in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Mount Tamborine. Her watercolours draw heavily on her travels in Europe, Australia and Vietnam.
Val is fascinated by the way history haunts the present. Old buildings, crumbling paintwork, narrow laneways intrude on our modern world of light, space, crisp lines and colours. What we feel in a place, the mood of it, is not just about today but also about happenings long before we arrived. So some of her works reveal continuity and contrast, harmony and disjunction, reflections and pictures within pictures.
